This story opens on August 2, 1793, when Marie Antoinette was separated from her family and moved from the Temple to the Conciergerie, a prison nicknamed the “waiting room for the guillotine.” There, prisoners briefly awaited their trial and execution. Although Marie Antoinette knew her end was near, she could not foresee that her trial and conviction on grave charges would only come after two and a half months.
